What is Hepatitis C and Why Should You Care?

Hepatitis C is a viral infection causing liver disease. Over 3 million people in the US are infected with hepatitis C and over half remain undiagnosed. The vast majority of individuals living with hepatitis C do not have symptoms. Hepatitis C is transmitted through contact with infected blood and many are unaware of their infection. If left untreated, hepatitis C can damage the liver to the point of cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver failure. The good news is that there are short-duration treatments that can lead to cure. The Johns Hopkins Viral Hepatitis Center is here to help more people get tested, treated and cured of this life-threatening disease. VA announced that it is on track to eliminate the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in as few as two months, in all Veterans willing and able to be treated.

As of March 3, 2019, nearly 116,000 Veterans started all-oral hepatitis C medications in VA, of which 96,654 Veterans completed treatment and have been cured.

Best Diet for Hepatitis C
The best diet for hepatitis C is one that anyone can follow to lose weight, since staying at a healthy weight is important for controlling this disease.

A good diet for hepatitis C is high in fruits and vegetables, as these foods usually have plenty of vitamin C and folic acid. In addition to such products, those following this type of diet should ensure that whole grains play a large role. Thus, whole grain bread, cereal, and brown rice are all recommended foods for those with hepatitis C.

Some foods should be limited when following a diet for hepatitis C, as they can be harmful in large amounts. Sodium is one of these products, as excessive salt can cause bloating, making the liver work harder than it should get rid of toxins. Animal products are also to be limited, including dairy and red meat.

Alcohol is typically prohibited on a diet for hepatitis C since there is no known amount that is safe to consume when this disease is present. Thus, caffeinated beverages like most types of cola, coffee, and tea should be avoided among those with hepatitis C.

A Special Diet for Hepatitis C: Dr. Joe Galati Explains

Weight No Comments »

In this video, Dr. Joe Galati, with Liver Specialists of Texas, explains a frequent question he is asked. Patients wonder if there is a specific diet for those with chronic hepatitis C? Dr. Galati reviews the answer, and talks about the need for a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh cuts of lean meat. There is no specific hepatitis C diet to follow, simply an unrefined, unprocessed diet.

Advertised diet plans specific to the liver are unfounded. In general, a diet full of fresh nutrients will be best for everyone, not just those with liver disease and hepatitis. A diet of fresh fruits and vegetables will support weight loss, also a benefit for those battling any form of liver disease. Read more at www.texasliver.com and www.yourhealthfirst.com.

What is Hep C And How Do You Get It?

Hepatitis C Warning Signs

Hepatitis C is a contagious disease caused by exposure to a certain kind of virus (see the drawing to the left). This virus causes inflammation of the liver, which can compromise liver function and lead to a serious scarring process known as cirrhosis.

Happily though, sometimes “hep C” results in nothing more than an acute but mild form, and no symptoms ever appear. The virus passes out of the body in a matter of months. But it can definitely be dangerous, even life-threatening, if it becomes chronic.

Four out of five people who contract acute hepatitis C never show any symptoms. But for the remaining 20 percent, the following warning signs may appear.

* Jaundice, which causes the skin and eyes to become yellowed, is a classic sign of liver problems.

* Gastrointestinal issues, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and clay-colored stools during bowel movements.

* Darker than normal urine

* Decreased appetite, often leading to unintentional weight loss.

* Fever, fatigue, and joint pain

Even in those who develop chronic hepatitis C, warning signs often don’t appear until there’s been significant damage to the liver. Therefore, regular physical checkups that include blood screening are important for detecting the hepatitis C virus as early as possible.

In addition to the symptoms previously listed, indications of chronic hepatitis C could include the following.

* Abdominal bloating and tenderness as fluids build up (a condition known as ascites).

* Swelling in the feet, ankles, or legs, caused whe these fluids move downward from the force of gravity.

* Skin becomes unusually itchy as toxins spread through the bloodstream

The purpose of this video has been to provide quick, basic information on hepatitis C warning signs. To learn more about hepatitis C and other liver problems, click on the links below the video screen.

And always remember, you should rely only on advice from a medical professional in any matter related to your health.
